I want to begin by saying thank you to Father Gerome and your community for inviting me here today to celebrate this Eucharist with you in this renovated space. We give thanks to God for the gift of this physical building and, above all, for the gift of the church and the faith that unites us.

먼저, 오늘 이 새롭게 단장된 공간에서 여러분과 함께 거룩한 미사를 봉헌하도록 초대해 주신 예로니모 신부님과 이 공동체에 감사드립니다. 우리는 이 건물이라는 물리적인 선물뿐만 아니라, 무엇보다도 우리를 하나로 묶어주는 교회와 믿음의 선물에 대해 하느님께 감사드립니다.

In the gospel today, they ask Jesus, “Will only few be saved?” And Jesus refuses to answer that question. He does not say whether few or a lot will be saying. Instead, he directs everyone's attention and our attention as well, to another thing, to how we will be saved. Not how many, but how. And he gives a very beautiful answer. He says, Strive to enter through the narrow gate. 

오늘 복음에서 사람들이 예수님께 묻습니다. “구원받는 사람이 적습니까?”  그러나 예수님께서는 그 질문에 직접 답하시지 않습니다. 소수만 구원받는지, 많은 사람이 구원받는지 말씀하지 않으십니다. 대신에 예수님은 모든 이들의 시선을, 그리고 우리의 시선을 다른 데로 향하게 하십니다. ‘얼마나 많은 사람이 구원받을 것인가’가 아니라, ‘어떻게 구원받을 것인가’에 주목하게 하십니다. 그리고 예수님은 이렇게 말씀하십니다. “좁은 문으로 들어가도록 힘써라.”

Focus on this, on the narrow gate. But let me begin with the verb that Jesus is using. He says, strive. Other translations put it in a more dramatic way. Strain your every nerve. Put every effort. Exert yourself to enter the narrow gate. Our salvation, the most important thing in our lives, depends on our constant shriving. It is not just one decision made at one point in our life. No, it is a decision that needs to be repeated constantly and lived out

constantly through this attitude of striving, exerting ourselves.

여기서 중요한 것은 바로 좁은 문입니다. 하지만 먼저, 예수님께서 사용하신 동사에 주목합시다. 예수님은 “힘쓰라”라고 말씀하십니다. 다른 번역에서는 “온 힘을 다하라”, “모든 노력을 기울이라”, “몸과 마음을 다해 좁은 문으로 들어가라”고 조금 더 극적으로 표현하기도 합니다.

우리의 구원, 즉 삶에서 가장 중요한 일은 끊임없는 노력에 달려 있습니다. 구원은 인생에서 단 한 번 내리는 선택으로 끝나는 것이 아닙니다. 절대 아니죠, 구원은 끊임없이 반복하고, 매일매일 실천해야 하는 결단입니다. 이 결단은 힘쓰고 자신을 다하는 태도를 통해 살아내야 합니다.

The Greek verb that is used is agonito, which literally means wrestling, engaging in a contest, athletic contest to win something important. Saint Teresa of Ávila, a doctor of the church, would say that in order to become saints, that is, to be saved, we need a determined determination. In Spanish she would say “determinada determinación.” We have to choose it with all our being to become saints, to follow God, to live for example. 

복음에서 사용된 헬라어 동사는 ἀγωνίζομαι(agonizó)로, 문자 그대로 “씨름하다, 경쟁하다, 중요한 것을 얻기 위해 경기에 임하다”라는 뜻입니다. 교회 학자이신 아빌라의 성녀 데레사는 이렇게 말했습니다. “성인이 되기 위해, 곧 구원받기 위해서는 결연한 결심이 필요하다.” 스페인어로는 “determinada determinación”이라고 표현합니다. 우리는 성인이 되고, 하느님을 따르며, 하느님을 위해 살아가겠다는 결심을 온 마음을 다해 선택해야 합니다.

There are many things in our life that are out of our hands. They do not depend much upon us. Whether it rains or shines, we cannot really control that. But one thing we do control are intentions, the attitudes of our heart, the attitudes with which we approach everything in life. And Jesus says that prevailing attitude must be the want of living for God, pleasing God, striving to enter through the narrow gate.

우리 삶에는 우리가 어쩔 수 없는 일들이 많습니다. 그것들은 우리의 손에 달려 있지 않습니다. 비가 오는지, 해가 비치는지는 우리가 통제할 수 없습니다.
그러나 우리가 확실히 통제할 수 있는 한 가지가 있습니다. 바로 우리의 의도와 마음가짐, 그리고 삶의 모든 일에 임하는 태도입니다. 예수님께서는 우리가 가져야 할 주된 태도는 하느님을 위해 살고, 하느님을 기쁘시게 하며, 좁은 문으로 들어가려 힘쓰는 태도라고 말씀하십니다.

And what is this narrow gate? Briefly, it's the way of Jesus. Jesus is the one who is the narrow gate and who walks through the narrow gate, and who leads us through the narrow gate. At the beginning of the gospel story today, we hear that Jesus is walking towards Jerusalem. He is on his way to Jerusalem. After his ministry in Galilee, at one point, as we hear in the gospel, Jesus sets his face towards Jerusalem. Exactly Luke chapter 9, verse 51, we hear that he set his face towards Jerusalem. To set one’s face is a Semitic idiom that means to make a strong resolve, an unshakable resolve to do something. And Jesus' resolve, Jesus's striving is to go to Jerusalem, to be crucified and to rise back to life. That is his way, and that is our way. The way of the cross. The way of that love that is ready to make any sacrifice for the beloved.

그렇다면 이 좁은 문은 무엇입니까? 간단히 말하면, 예수님의 길입니다. 예수님께서 바로 그 좁은 문이시며, 좁은 문을 먼저 걸어가시고, 우리를 그 길로 인도하십니다.

오늘 복음 이야기의 처음에서 우리는 예수님께서 예루살렘을 향해 걸어가시는 모습을 듣습니다. 갈릴래아에서 사명을 마치신 후, 예수님은 예루살렘으로 향하시기로 굳게 결심하십니다. 정확히 루카복음 9장 51절에서, “예수께서 얼굴을 예루살렘으로 향하셨다”라고 기록되어 있습니다. 여기서 “얼굴을 향하다”라는 표현은, 셈족의 관용구로서 ‘흔들림 없는 결심, 확고한 의지’를 의미합니다.

예수님의 결심, 즉 예수님의 헌신적 노력은 예루살렘으로 가시고, 십자가에 달리시며, 다시 살아나시는 길입니다. 그것이 바로 예수님의 길이며, 동시에 우리의 길입니다. 십자가의 길, 사랑하는 이를 위해 어떤 희생도 기꺼이 감수하는 사랑의 길입니다.

We know that the cross is very much part of our Christian life. To be a good and responsible parent, you have to make many sacrifices, to be a good and faithful spouse, you have to make many sacrifices. To be good and faithful and the responsible follower of Jesus, you have to make many sacrifices. 

십자가는 우리의 그리스도인 삶에서 빼놓을 수 없는 부분입니다. 좋은 부모가 되려면 많은 희생이 필요합니다. 좋은 배우자, 성실한 배우자가 되려면 많은 희생이 필요합니다. 그리고 충실한 신앙인, 책임 있는 제자가 되려면 반드시 많은 희생이 뒤따릅니다.

Just a couple of days ago, I was with our seminarians studying for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. I was actually with a group of those who are at their first stage of formation, who are at a college level, studying philosophy. Twelve of those men whom I met just last Friday were graduating. They had just entered the program of priestly formation. Some of them were as young as 18. Others were in their 30s. But all of them, which were very beautiful to see, answered God's call. They left behind their lives, their families, their homes, sometimes their careers and their jobs, and entered the seminary. And as exciting as it was for them to respond to God's call, it was also very painful. Some of them moved out of their homes for the first time in their lives. They left their moms and their dads and their siblings. Some of them, as I said, left successful careers to answer God's call. There is some pain oftentimes involved in our decision to follow Jesus. And that is exactly that narrow path through which Jesus is calling us to pass.

며칠 전, 저는 로스앤젤레스 대교구 신학생들과 함께 있었습니다. 그들 가운데는 이제 막 첫 단계 양성 과정을 시작한 대학부 신학생 12명이 있었습니다. 어떤 이는 18살에 불과했고, 어떤 이는 30대였습니다. 하지만 모두 하느님의 부르심에 응답하여 가정과 삶, 직업을 뒤로하고 신학교에 들어왔습니다. 참으로 아름다운 일이었지만, 동시에 쉽지 않은 선택이었습니다. 부모와 형제를 떠나야 했고, 어떤 이는 성공적인 직업을 내려놓아야 했습니다. 예수님을 따르는 길에는 언제나 이런 아픔이 뒤따릅니다. 또한 바로 그 길이 바로 예수님께서 우리를 지나가도록 부르시는 그 좁은 길입니다. 

Today as we celebrate this Eucharistic banquet, we ask the Lord as He comes into our hearts to draw us even closer to Himself, so that by the power and attraction of his love, every day he may strive to enter through the narrow gate to follow the Lord to the end. Amen.

오늘 이 거룩한 미사에서, 우리 마음 속에 오시는 주님께 청합시다. 주님께서 우리 마음 속에 들어오셔서 우리를 더욱 가까이 이끌어 주시어, 그 사랑의 힘과 끌림으로 날마다 좁은 문으로 들어가 주님을 끝까지 따르도록 힘씁시다. 아멘.
